A BRIEF GUIDE TO SELECTED HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES – GUAIACUM OFFICINALE (GUAIAC, RESIN OF LIGNUM VITAE)
In Paracelsus’ time, merchants brought home a sort of wood that was said to contain a medicinal resin. This wood was extraordinary because it sank in water, obviously being heavier than water, and this made it different from any other wood known at the time. It was found in the West Indies and South America and, when heated, a resin flowed from it that became a remedy for consumption.
Today, Guaiacum lx is one of the best medicines for pharyngitis. Five drops on a little sugar, taken every one or two hours, will almost certainly stop the symptoms in a short time. In fact, after two or three doses the patient will notice that the soreness has already begun to ease. Guaiacum acts as a specific in such cases, and bad-smelling sputum or perspiration is usually a sure indication for its use, at a medium potency, three times a day. Stabbing, tearing pains in the joints, with gouty deposits in them, have also been relieved by means of this remedy. Guaiacum is therefore an important ingredient in several ointments and embrocations. Used together with Lachesis, Guaiacum will bring quick relief for those who suffer from tonsillitis.
